INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY – PLEDGE FOR PARITY
2016-03-03
Kharidhepa, Chandiput, Mohana
Festivity was not only visible from outside, but in their spirits. It felt as if they were celebrating an age-old customary festival to flaunt their empowerment, their out-of-the-box thinking, and unconventional outlook. Yes, the normal traditional perceptions we gather when we think of rural womenfolk has been transformed. They are more awakened, empowered with a spirit of togetherness and equality par with their male counterparts. This was clearly noticeable at Kharidhepa Panchayat Development Committee (PDC) Office on 3rd March 2016, when over 500 women from 4 Gram Panchayats in Mohana gathered to mark the International Women’s Day.
Sri Chandra Shekhar Panchayat Unnayan Nagarik Sanghathan, Chandiput organized a Women Convention to mark the International Women’s Day falls on 8th March every year. The people’s organization promoted by SACAL, way back in 2004, were assisted by Panchayat level institutions from other 4 Gram Panchayats and 79 SHGs promoted by the NGO in the past one decade.
While the convocation was sponsored by the people’s institutions and SHGs, SACAL provided managerial support to the host organization. PRI representatives from the five Gram Panchayats, Mohana Block and Zilla Parishad member were among the dignitaries attended the convocation and exhorted the women for the good work.
A street play was staged on the occasion to educate the community on sexual harassment and gender violence at workplaces, at families due to traditional chauvinistic attitude of the society. The play staged by TEAM, Bhubaneswar spread the message of taking immediate action against violence. It said as long as the victim remained silent, violence and oppression would continue or increase.
This was the 13th Women Convention celebrated by the people’s institutions promoted by SACAL and this time all the village and Gram Panchayat level institutions came forward to financially support for the cause. While the grassroots women SHGs contributed from Rs 500 to 700 in cash, 10 to 20 kgs of rice each, the PDCs contributed from Rs 1000 to 5000 in cash.
The motivation and spirit, especially of the womenfolk was clearly perceptible during the event. When it comes to host an event to showcase their parity, equality, enlightenment and empowerment, they come forward with all their resources. This is a vital sign of sustainability in rural development projects, when people take own decision and action accordingly and collectively.
